Understanding your heat pump

What you may notice when your heat pump runs.

Heat pumps can sound and feel different from furnaces. These behaviors may be part of normal operation, but a change in performance or trouble keeping your home comfortable deserves a closer look.

Steam off the outdoor unit

A brief cloud of water vapor can occur during defrost in cold, damp weather. If you see smoke, smell burning, or are unsure what is happening, keep clear and call for help.

The air feels cool coming out

Heat pump supply air can feel less hot than furnace air. If the house is not reaching the thermostat setting or the air suddenly feels different, call us to check operation.

It runs almost constantly

Long, steady operation can be expected, especially with variable-capacity equipment or in cold weather. Contact us if comfort drops, the system changes behavior, or energy use rises unexpectedly.

Ice on the outdoor coil

A light layer of frost may clear during defrost. Heavy ice that remains or keeps building needs service. Do not chip the ice or apply heat to the unit.

Heat pump troubleshooting

Common heat pump problems we check.

We check the heating and cooling equipment, controls, airflow, and backup heat to find the cause of the problem. Similar symptoms can have different causes, so testing comes before a repair recommendation.

Reversing valve

We check the valve and its controls when the system does not switch properly between heating and cooling.

Defrost control

We check sensors, controls, and defrost operation when outdoor ice does not clear or the system defrosts unusually often.

Backup heat stuck on

Unexpected backup-heat operation can increase electricity use. We test the controls, thermostat settings, and heating stages to find out why it is running.

Low refrigerant

Low refrigerant can affect both heating and cooling. We check operation and explain whether leak investigation, repair, or charging is needed.

Capacitors and contactors

We test electrical components and the equipment they support before recommending replacement.

Thermostat mismatch

Heat pump controls must match the equipment and backup heat. We verify compatibility, wiring, and setup when the system is not responding correctly.

Choosing a system for your home

Is a heat pump right for your house?

A heat pump can be a good choice for many local homes. We compare your comfort needs, current fuel, ductwork, electrical capacity, and equipment options before recommending a system.

  • Your current heating costs. We compare fuel prices, equipment performance, and the way you use your home.
  • Replacing an aging air conditioner. This can be a useful time to compare a heat pump with a cooling-only replacement.
  • Your home's heating needs. Equipment selection starts with the home, its heat loss, and the comfort you want.
  • Ductwork and airflow. We check whether the existing ducts can support the proposed system.
  • Backup heat. We explain the backup option, when it would operate, and how it affects running costs.
  • Dual fuel options. A compatible furnace and heat pump may be worth considering. We explain the controls and tradeoffs.

Useful answers before you call

Heat pump questions.

Do heat pumps work in Pennsylvania winters?
Yes, suitable heat pumps can provide heating in our climate. Performance depends on the equipment, outdoor temperature, and the needs of your home. We size and select the system, check available capacity, and explain any backup heat it needs.
Why does my heat pump blow cool air?
Heat pump air may feel less hot than furnace air, and operation changes during defrost. If your home is losing temperature, the air suddenly changes, or you are concerned, contact us. We check the equipment rather than diagnosing by air temperature alone.
My outdoor unit is steaming. Is it broken?
A short cloud of water vapor can occur during defrost in cold, damp weather. Persistent ice, poor heating, smoke, or a burning smell needs attention. If you cannot tell whether it is steam or smoke, keep clear and seek help.
Why did my electric bill increase?
Weather, rates, thermostat settings, equipment problems, and backup heat can all affect electricity use. Tell us what changed and bring any useful usage history. We can check operation and controls for causes that need attention.
Should I replace my furnace with a heat pump?
We compare your current system, fuel costs, comfort needs, ductwork, electrical capacity, and replacement options. A heat pump, furnace, or dual fuel system may suit your home. We explain the costs and tradeoffs before you choose.
How often does a heat pump need maintenance?
Heating and cooling season visits are a useful schedule for a system that works year-round. Follow the requirements for your equipment and ask us which plan suits it. Our annual plans provide two visits for $325 or four for $600 for one HVAC system.
Can I use any smart thermostat?
The thermostat must support your heat pump, heating stages, and backup heat. We can check compatibility, wiring, and settings before installation or when troubleshooting a control problem.
