A real Middletown HVAC project

From a leaking oil boiler to a fresh start.

This home started with a leaking oil boiler. Middletown HVAC installed a Bosch heat pump for heating and cooling, along with a Navien tankless water heater for hot water. Here is what that change looked like.

What would getting off oil look like at your house?

We review your heating needs, hot water, ductwork, fuel options and electrical capacity before recommending a plan. Your home's scope and final price are confirmed before you approve the work.

A new system needs care, too. Compare maintenance plans and ask which service fits your heat pump and water heater.

THE COST OF ANOTHER FILL-UP

250 gallons. $2,000. And that is one delivery.

If your supplier is quoting $8 per gallon, that is what 250 gallons costs before any extra fees. It is worth seeing what else your home could run on before committing to another season of deliveries.

Example based on an $8-per-gallon quote. Supplier prices, order sizes, and delivery terms vary. This is not a statewide average, savings estimate, or payback promise.

Where things stand

A heating plan that fits your home and budget.

When a delivery takes a serious bite out of your household budget, the question is simple: does it still make sense to heat your home this way? We make that comparison practical. See the heating options, review published installed pricing, and talk with a local team about the path that fits your house.

You do not need a stack of receipts to start the conversation. Tell us what heats your home and what is bothering you about it. We can discuss a full conversion, ductless for the rooms you use most, or separate hot water so the oil boiler is not running just for showers. Your actual fuel use and local rates help us compare operating costs when you are ready.

  • We compare options for your home. Your current equipment, comfort needs, and available utilities guide the recommendation.
  • Sometimes the answer is gas, and we will say so. If your street has a main, a high-efficiency gas furnace may beat every heat pump option on your particular house. We do those conversions too, and they are priced on this page.
  • Sometimes the answer is “not this year.” That is a real recommendation and you will hear it from us when it is the honest one.

Options for oil and propane homes

There is more than one way to do this.

We compare your heating needs, ductwork, fuel availability, electrical capacity, and budget. The options below include full conversions and smaller steps.

Full conversion to a heat pump

A matched heat pump and air handler may replace an existing oil or propane system. We assess the heating load, ducts, electrical work, and backup needs. Starting at $9,775 installed.

Hybrid — keep the oil furnace as backup

A compatible existing oil furnace may provide backup alongside a heat pump. We assess the equipment and controls and quote this option after an on-site visit.

Dual fuel — gas or propane backup

A heat pump and compatible gas or propane furnace provide heating under a coordinated control strategy. The scope includes the appropriate fuel setup. Starting at $11,650 installed.

Convert to natural gas instead

Where service is available, a gas furnace and central air may be worth comparing. We review utility availability and installation requirements. Starting at $10,000 installed.

Boiler homes and the starter step

Ductless equipment can add heating and cooling to suitable rooms without extending ductwork. We assess room loads and plan the equipment and zones. Explore ductless options.

The summer-winter hookup

If your boiler also provides domestic hot water, a separate water heater may be worth considering. We assess the existing setup and explain the work needed. Explore water heating.

Or keep what you have

Keeping serviceable equipment may be the right step for now. We explain condition, maintenance needs, and the options for planning a future change.

If you heat with propane

Options for homes that heat with propane.

A heat pump or a dual fuel system may be worth considering in a propane home. We assess the furnace, ductwork, controls, electrical supply, and heating needs before recommending a plan.

  • Read your tank agreement before you commit to anything. If your propane tank is leased, the supplier agreement may carry minimum-purchase clauses, tank pickup terms or final-fill provisions. Ask your supplier to explain any tank agreement terms, charges, and timing before changing fuel use.
  • Tank ownership and removal arrangements should still be confirmed.
  • Everything else on this page applies to propane exactly as written — the equipment, the warranty, the estimate and the financing.

Use our estimator to explore installed pricing by system, capacity, and equipment tier. An on-site assessment confirms the equipment selection, installation scope, and final price for your home.

Heat pump and air handler $9,775

Installed, and up. The full conversion: all-electric heating and cooling on your existing ductwork.

Dual fuel with gas or propane backup $11,650

Installed, and up. A heat pump for everyday weather with the furnace available when the control strategy calls for it.

Gas furnace and air conditioner $10,000

Installed, and up. The answer when your street has a main and a heat pump is not the honest recommendation.

Starting prices vary with capacity, equipment selection, and installation scope. Use the estimator to explore the options, then arrange an assessment to confirm the complete proposal.

  • Oil hybrid systems need an on-site assessment. Keeping an existing oil furnace as backup depends on that specific furnace, its blower, its coil and its controls all working together with the heat pump. There are too many real variables for a self-serve number to be honest, so we look at yours and put the price in writing. Everything else about how we quote stays the same.
  • What the installed price includes: matched equipment sized for the home; removal of old HVAC equipment; standard installation materials; standard control for the selected tier; startup and commissioning; 3-year Middletown HVAC labor warranty.
  • What is priced separately when needed: major ductwork corrections; electrical upgrades or new circuits; new line set when existing piping cannot be reused; oil tank work; zoning or specialty controls; difficult attic or crawlspace access, crane or lift work; permit and inspection fees.
Compare equipment options

An example of equipment and installation pricing.

The prices below compare listed equipment options for a four-ton heat pump and air handler configuration. Your home may need a different capacity or installation scope, which we confirm during the assessment.

Comfort Value $11,825

Tempstar Ion single-stage. Simple, proven, dependable. We confirm the selected model and its manufacturer warranty coverage before installation.

Bosch Inverter $13,400

Bosch IDS inverter. Runs at exactly the speed your home asks for — quieter, steadier, and remarkably efficient for the price. Wi-Fi connected control included.

Recommended $15,300

Tempstar Ion two-stage. Low gear and high gear. Runs easy and quiet most of the time, with full capacity in reserve for when the weather gets serious. Our most-installed setup.

Best Comfort $19,075

Tempstar Ion variable. Our smoothest and most precise system. Every component talks to every other component, constantly fine-tuning comfort, humidity and sound.

Your home’s equipment capacity comes from an assessment of its heating and cooling needs. We confirm the exact match and installation requirements in your proposal.

  • Electrical work included in the scope. Converting from oil or propane to electric heat almost always means new electrical circuits, and sometimes a panel upgrade. We check your panel as part of every estimate and quote that scope up front, in writing. The proposal explains the included scope and any separately priced work.
The question everybody asks

Will it keep up in January?

Heating performance depends on the exact equipment, outdoor temperature, and the needs of your home. We assess the heating load and check the proposed equipment’s low-temperature performance, including any backup heat requirement.

  • An older, leakier or high-load home works any system harder. That is precisely why we do a room-by-room load calculation before we quote instead of guessing from square footage. If your house is a poor candidate, the load calculation is where that shows up — and we would rather find it then than in February.
  • If you want a safety net regardless, that is what hybrid and dual fuel are for. The heat pump does the season’s work and your existing furnace sits there as insurance. Plenty of families choose this specifically so the question never has to be answered in the abstract.
  • We will confirm the cold-weather rating on the exact equipment we propose, in writing, with your quote. Published low-temperature performance differs by model and we are not going to quote you a number off the wrong one.

From our Google reviews

A 5.0 Google rating. Stories from real homeowners.

These homeowners describe their experience with our local team, from discussing options to installation and follow-up.

Middletown HVAC just installed a new HVAC system for us. From obtaining quotes to final installation, we found their customer service excellent, the installers were polite and professional, and the project was finished in a very quick timeframe. In comparison to other quotes we received, we found them very reasonable. An additional bonus is that their equipment warranty is longer than the standard. For all those reasons, we would highly recommend Middletown HVAC.

Mary Ellen M. · Google review · May 2026

Had a great experience working with Bryan & Heather. Started with an emergency call late evening during a bad winter storm when our old HVAC broke. Bryan came right out to diagnose the problem. Due to our old system being very old, it made sense to replace the entire system rather then the specific part which caused the issue. Bryan took the time to explain everything so I could make an informed decision and trusting his guidance. He even came back in the middle of the night to leave space heaters for our family until the new system could be installed.

Since the new system was installed we have a few minor issues, most of which are due to our unique house issues. However, Bryan or his team comes right out immediately upon contacting them. I would definitely recommend Middletown HVAC to anyone dealing with HVAC issues.

  • Middletown HVAC 3-year labor warranty on installations — most shops give you one year.
  • Manufacturer warranty. Manufacturer warranty coverage depends on the equipment selected and registration requirements. We register warranties in your name and confirm the applicable terms on your final selection before you sign.
  • A real person answers the phone. Call or text for urgent service availability. After-hours diagnostic charges are listed on our emergency service page.
  • Small enough to know your name, large enough to handle the whole house.

Financing may help spread the project cost for qualified customers. We explain the available options so you can review the terms before deciding.

Useful answers before you call

Conversion questions.

Can a home with radiators use heat pumps?
Ductless equipment may provide heating and cooling without new ductwork. We assess the rooms, heating needs, and existing boiler before recommending a full or partial conversion.
What if my oil boiler also makes hot water?
We assess the existing domestic hot water setup and compare a separate water heater where appropriate. The proposal explains any work needed and how the boiler would operate afterward.
Does the project include oil tank removal?
Our standard conversion leaves the tank in place. Any tank work is stated separately in the proposal. Buried tanks require an appropriate specialist.
What happens to a leased propane tank?
Contact the supplier to confirm your agreement, tank ownership, charges, and any arrangements needed before changing fuel use. We coordinate our installation scope with the information you provide.
Will my electrical service support a heat pump?
We assess electrical requirements for the selected equipment. Any required circuits or service upgrades are explained in the installation proposal.
Should I compare natural gas as well?
Where gas service is available, it may be worth comparing. We review utility availability, equipment, installation scope, and operating-cost considerations for your home.
Will a heat pump cost less to run?
Operating cost depends on the home, equipment, weather, thermostat use, and fuel and electricity rates. We use your actual usage and available rates to discuss the comparison rather than promising a fixed saving.
Why do installation prices vary?
Equipment capacity, model, ductwork, electrical work, access, controls, and other installation requirements affect the total. The on-site assessment confirms the complete scope and price.
Can I make a smaller change first?
A partial conversion, compatible hybrid system, or separate water heater may be worth considering. We explain which steps suit your current equipment, goals, and budget.
What warranty applies?
Manufacturer coverage depends on the selected equipment and registration requirements. We confirm the terms for the final selection. Middletown HVAC also provides a 3-year installation labor warranty, with the applicable terms explained in the proposal.
How long will installation take?
Timing depends on the equipment, access, and scope. We provide a project schedule with the proposal and explain any expected interruption to heating, cooling, or hot water.
